Who are the Roma?

The Roma are a minority group that makes up 1-2% of the population of Ukraine. They are commonly referred to as Gypsies, originated in India. They have since spread throughout Europe, the Middle East, and Central Asia. They have no country of their own, and in many places live nomadic lives. From the 16th-19th centuries, they were slaves in Eastern Europe, and since emancipation, have faced many struggles connected to poverty, discrimination, and human trafficking. In Ukraine, they have been disproportionately affected by the war. Many lived (and still live) in what are now front-line areas, and the economic hardship has further limited their work opportunities. Their communities often face poverty, illiteracy, and a total lack of access to healthcare. Many of their communities have growing churches who are laboring to meet their needs both spiritually and physically.
